I grew up in Guernsey and spent the early years of my professional life working on the island; it’s a small close knit community and paths cross regularly so it pays to build strong long term working relationships which can survive both the good and bad times…because both will occur.
This long term outlook plays out equally well in private equity as its important to both trust and respect management teams as working lives are intertwined for many years. Investor relationships can be even longer and stretch across multiple funds.
The role of COO is the glue which holds the organisation together and provides a platform on which the rest of the team can work hard and excel – a job well done for someone in my position is one that no one really notices!
“Work to live” or “Live to work” – I have always strived for a bit of both and working hard with smart, engaging people is a good place to start.
